I am in my fifth term as a Liberal Democrat County Councillor and District Councillor representing your views and fighting for your needs.
Retirement
It is I hope an appropriate time to let you know that after some 20 years as your County Councillor I will not be standing again. I have enjoyed trying to point policy the way you would wish and to deliver what you want. I will continue to put maximum effort into the task of persuading the District Administrations to do what is best for you as deputy leader of the Green and Liberal Democrat Group that includes half the members of the council. Unfortunately we don’t have the chair so are not the administration but we do seek to make a constructive contribution.
My Replacement
We have found an excellent hard-working candidate to take over. Adrienne Marriott, who lives in Bramford has considerable skills in the health and education areas. Restrictions on leafleting allowing, we will be presenting her to you as soon as possible and for your endorsement in May.
My Background
I have lived in Baylham with my wife Kay for 27 years have two adult children and a grandson at Colchester Institute.
I worked as a department a manager in high-tech industry responsible for finance, development policy, people & project management in Thorn EMI and then at BT at Martlesham. I have experience as technical lead for company negotiations in my specialty in several countries including France, the USA and Japan. I am a member of the Institution of Engineering Technology.
In June 2001 I was elected County Councillor to represent Gipping Valley: Akenham, Barham, Gt. & Lt. Blakenham, Bramford, Claydon, Flowton, Hemingstone, Henley and Whitton Rural. I was elected Mid Suffolk District Councillor for Bramford and Blakenham Ward in November 2005.
At County, I am Vice Chair of Scrutiny and a member of the Police and Crime Panel.
I of course attend meetings of the full council and cabinet where as part of the Liberal Democrat, Green and Independant opposition I try to examine the administration’s proposals and, where I think it necessary make constructive proposals for improvements or alternatives.
At Mid Suffolk, I represent your views on issues such as planning policy, housing, rents, waste collection and at budget time on council tax. I also serve on the Planning committee and a development control committee. These are “quasi-judicial “making decisions that impact dramatically on your environment, guided by planning law, the government planning guidance framework and Mid Suffolk Policy.
As a local resident, I believe I understand the issues in Gipping Valley and in Blakenham Ward and have worked well with Parish Councils and other local organisations. I have championed new road safety measures including the vehicle activated electronic speed signs in the area. I have helped local groups to make extensive improvements to children’s playgrounds and other recreational facilities. I am a Governor at Claydon Primary School . I have worked with other governors to help the leadership teams and staff to raise their game to “Good”, the level our children deserve. I am Chairman of the Suez-Environnement liaison group that keeps you informed about the Incinerator and makes you views heard via local representatives.
