Many people have not decided. There is a lot of mis-information from the No Campaign (should I just say Tories?). They don’t want elections defined by anyone but Conservative voters. Only their views must be heard, democracy is the right to vote for them. To quote a local candidate “If you want the supporters of extreme parties and joke candidates to determine the outcome at Westminster you’ll support AV”. So Greens, UKIP, Labour and Liberal Democrats should not be able to have a say. Of course Conservatives forget that any party, they included, can have a small number of supporters in some areas. Those supporters should able to make their choices without being forced into tactical voting on what may well be inaccurate information.
The thought that the true “extreme parties and joke candidates” with their very few voters will have any dramatic influence on final outcomes is just ridiculous.
Conservatives feel that the present system has served “us” well. It has served the Conservative party well. To quote from today’s “Observer,” only in 1900 and 1931 did the Conservatives have a majority of votes but they were in power for most of the last century. We want people to be able to select the candidate they prefer, the one they think will work hard with their interests at heart on the things they think are important. People must not feel that their vote is sure to be wasted because their first preference is for someone who won’t win. They should not have to ask should they support the person they want or would their vote be better placed on someone who has a better chance of winning? With AV they can make that their second preference and politicians will have a much better guide to people’s views.
AV is a small but good improvement making sure your vote is not wasted.
