Caroline Page, Woodbridge County Councillor (Toby Gray Photography)
About me
First elected Suffolk County Councillor for Woodbridge in 2008; re-elected 2009, 2013. In 2017 I was honoured to be re-elected for the fourth time, with a record turnout, a record majority and a record share of the vote.
In May 2018 I became Deputy Leader of Suffolk County Council’s LibDem, Green & Independent Group, as well as Leader of Suffolk County Council’s LibDem party, while remaining the first – and so far only – group spokesperson for Women at Suffolk County Council. In addition I am LDGI group spokesperson for Transport and Adult Care.
I’m campaigner for Rural Transport, Cycling, Libraries, Women, Young People, Disability, Family Carers and Epilepsy Awareness (amongst other things). Feel that people would be a lot happier if they got out of their cars and walked more. Even with my dodgy knee I walk an average 3.5 million steps every year.
A full-time family carer since the beginning of the millennium, I campaign ferociously for carers’ rights and public recognition for unpaid family carers. In 2015 Britain’s 6.4 million unpaid carers saved the UK £87 bn in potential care costs – more than the government’s total NHS spend. The UK faces significant economic consequences if even a small proportion of family carers gave up their caring role through eg ill health or lack of support. Yet ironically, many carers are forced into poverty and a low quality of life because, being unpaid, the government puts no value on their work until they have to be replaced.
Prizewinning poet and short story writer; Epilepsy Society Champion 2013; shortlisted Young Epilepsy Gold Champion award 2013; Frances Minns Memorial award for outstanding typographic design, London College of Printing; University Challenge team captain (St Hilda’s Oxford ) back in the mists of time. Cycled unsupported from Lands End to John o’Groats within living memory (2008).
In these times of public spending cuts and when we are all being asked to economise, why is is that the park and ride car park at Martlesham is so heavily lit at night after closing time? From the A12 one can see it blazing. There is a gate in place for security. Also it is not good for your carbon footprint. As my taxes help to pay for this can you please give me a sensible reason for this extravagance
Dear Carrie,
I wholly agree that it seems to be a waste of money to keep the lights at the Martlesham Park and Ride blazing all night, both in terms of cost and of carbon footprint. I have passed your comment onto the relevant officer at SCC.
If the lights are owned by Suffolk County Council they will be switched off/dimmed shortly (over the next few weeks) unless there is an overriding need to keep them on. This is because – in order specifically to save money and to reduce the County Council’s carbon footprint – this is happening to all council-owned lights in Suffolk. If you live in Woodbridge, you can read about the implications for Woodbridge in my blog entry http://carolinepage.blog.suffolk.libdems.org/2011/11/06/starrier-nights-in-suffolk/, otherwise you can find full details of the lighting changes in all other Suffolk towns/villages on the council website
