Banning headphones will only add to safety if the ban is all-embracing. In a past near-fatal encounter with a rogue HGV the fact that I wore no headphones did nothing for my safety because the HGV driver who ran me down was wearing them. Having failed to spot me – neon yellow and glittering with lights – in front of him, he was unable to hear hear either my airhorn or my screams.
